iCON South Asian Health Forum: Healthy and Happy Living at Home
On March 5, 2017, iCON held its 8th South Asian Health Forum at the Grand Taj Banquet Hall in Surrey, BC. This year’s theme was “Healthy and Happy Living at Home”.
Honourable Minister Amrik Virk and Honourable Minister Peter Fassbender were in attendance, and welcomed the audience on behalf of Premier Christy Clark speaking to the importance of chronic disease prevention and management. Honourable Minister Peter Fassbender shared his story:
“I am a Type 2 diabetic, and part of it was that I didn’t live the lifestyle I should have until it was too late, and what I think today is all about is opening our minds to the possibilities for prevention, to stop and live a lifestyle that will ensure we can do the best to prevent disease.”
The forum provided South Asian seniors, their families and caregiver’s education and strategies to help seniors stay independent, age well, and live healthy at home. With close to 300 attendees, health experts shared important information on chronic disease prevention and management, falls and injury prevention, healthy living, nutrition, medication management, mental wellness and community support services including digital resources.
Prior to the forum, local community organizations participated in the open house to share information and resources about their services. Please click on their link below to learn more about them!
